A cover-up tattoo is the art of transforming an existing tattoo into a completely new piece of work. It is not simply tattooing over the old design — it requires calculating the existing ink's colour, density, and placement, then engineering a new design that incorporates or conceals those elements naturally. Artist Ssab describes cover-up work as "creativity within constraints." The existing tattoo is not an obstacle — it is a starting point that shapes the new design in ways a blank canvas never could.
Most tattoos can be covered up, but the success of the result depends heavily on the condition of the existing ink. Faded old tattoos, blurred linework, and small pieces are the most straightforward to work with. Dense black-filled tattoos, very large pieces, or cases where the client wants a completely different style without laser removal require a more complex approach. A proper consultation — ideally with photos of the existing tattoo — is essential before any cover-up project begins.
Cover-up designs are typically 20–30% larger than the original tattoo to ensure full coverage. Dark existing ink is most effectively concealed by black & grey realism or Japanese irezumi — styles that use deep tonal ranges and complex layering. Florals, wildlife, geometric patterns, and mandalas all translate well into cover-up work. The goal is not just to hide the old tattoo, but to create a new piece that stands on its own as a work of art.
Laser removal eliminates ink entirely but requires multiple sessions, significant cost, and skin recovery time between treatments. A cover-up delivers a new piece in a single session — faster and often more satisfying. In some cases, a hybrid approach works best: using laser to fade the existing tattoo by 50–70%, then proceeding with a cover-up. This opens up far more design freedom and produces cleaner results. Which path is right for you depends on the specific tattoo — a consultation will clarify the options.
Cover-up work requires more detailed consultation than a standard tattoo. Before reaching out, prepare clear photos of your existing tattoo — ideally in good lighting from multiple angles. Contact via Instagram DM (@seoultattoosalon) or KakaoTalk with the photos and a brief description of what you'd like to achieve. Ssab will assess the existing work and outline what is realistically possible. Full English consultations are available at the Yongsan studio. International clients are welcome.
